Sheryl has worked in countries as diverse as
the United States, the Democratic Republic of
Congo, Bolivia, Pakistan, and Taiwan. She holds a
Master's Degree in Education from the University of
Minnesota and is a Nationally Board Certified
teacher in Mathematics. Sheryl has presented
workshops at both the annual National Council of
Teachers of Mathematics conference and the annual
National Science Teachers Association conference.
This is her third year teaching in Taiwan. Sheryl
and her husband, Brent, own a home in Squamish,
British Columbia and spend their summers rock
climbing, trail running and enjoying the great
outdoors.
Originally from rural Québec in Canada,
Patrick moved to British-Columbia after high-school
and made beautiful Vancouver his home for the
following eleven years. There, he earned his degree
in Physics and his certificate in education from
Simon Fraser University. In the fall of 2006, he
joined HIS as a Physics and Mathematics teacher,
and helped with the music program. Currently, he is
teaching Mathematics, Technology, and studying
Chinese.
Grant has spent the last 7 years living and
working in Taiwan. As a teacher first and foremost,
his passion is teaching students about the past and
enjoying sharing with them the experience of
understanding how the past affects the future we
live in today. He was born and educated in South
Africa and received his qualifications in History
and Educational Leadership. Having taught high
school History and Geography for many years in SA,
he decided to head overseas to experience life as
an international educator. After working in the
Elementary Department for 5 years, he decided to
return to his first love of working with older
students and spearheaded the creation of the
Secondary Department in 2005. As Principal of the
Secondary Department, Grant’s goals are to ensure
that the Secondary Department continues to growth
from strength to strength in the hopes of one day
taking its place amongst some of the fine
educational institutions in Asia.
Paul Moreau has been an educator in the USA,
The Netherlands, Thailand, Ecuador, and now Taiwan.
He has a Masters in Education and has received a
certificate for a year's work in Brain Research for
Educators and Parents from the University of
Washington. He also has an administrator
certificate to be a head of a school. He has taught
science, math, technology and has been a Principal
during his career as an educator. While teaching in
the state of Washington, he received a Presidential
Award for his science teaching and use of science
centers. His wife, Karen, is the Director of
Curriculum and Professional Development at Taipei
American School. Paul returns to Taipei each
weekend to spend time with his wife and two cats.
During their summer, they spend time in their home
in Mexico.
Brent has been involved in international
educational since 1994. He has taught in Syria,
Bolivia, Tanzania, Pakistan and Taiwan. He has a
master’s degree in education and is a Nationally
Board Certified teacher in Science. This year Brent
won the distinguished Apple Educators Award which
is given to educators working to promote technology
in education. Brent has published and presented
numerous topics on education worldwide. His current
article “One Size Does Not Fit All” will be
published in Educational Leadership this Spring.
Brent and his wife Sheryl live in Squamish British
Columbia and spend their summers biking, rock
climbing and enjoying the great outdoors.
Heather has taught English, drama, film and
media studies for the last nineteen years. After
working for twelve years in the Canadian public
school system, she ventured overseas, to schools in
Kuwait, Pakistan and Turkey. She has taught
Advanced Placement and IB courses. As well as being
a top notch Language Arts educator, Heather has
directed numerous school productions and is excited
to help with the productions at HIS. She has just
completed a Masters degree in international
education.
Angela majored in Social Studies Education
and minored in Language Literature and Education at
the National Teachers' College in Taipei. After
serving a one-year internship, she was granted a
teaching certification accredited by the Ministry
of Education, Taiwan. Because of her interest in
language instruction, she received a master's
degree in TESOL from University of Bristol, UK.
Previously, Angela taught at a public elementary
school and several cram schools in Taipei. After
graduate school, she worked as a researcher in the
Steering Committee of Test of Proficiency-Huayu and
was responsible for designing and developing the
Chinese Proficiency Test for non-native speakers of
Chinese. During her leisure time, she is fond of
playing the piano.
Ken is married to Brenda, who teaches in the
elementary department. Together they have three
boys, each HIS students. Ken brings a diverse
background of work experience that includes
residential education, administration, sales, and
marketing. Ken has been involved in education for
12 years. He has lived and worked in Taiwan, Hong
Kong and both the eastern and western United
States. Ken earned an undergraduate degree from a
private liberal arts university in Pennsylvania and
a masters degree in international &
multicultural education at the University of San
Francisco. He is a certified facilitator of
Practical Parent Education and has written a book
for youth entitled "Silent Burdens, A Story About
Fitting In." While taking a hiatus from his
doctoral studies in Human Development Ken continues
to relish the significant personal and professional
growth that comes each day from his work with both
students and parents. In his free time Ken is a
proud husband and a father who enjoys traveling,
meeting people, learning and spending time with his
family.
Catherine grew up in a family of five and
she's the youngest one. She has enjoyed being back
here after living in Canada for 7 years. She
attended Windsor Secondary School located in North
Vancouver and then moved to Ontario for her
undergraduate study. She received her Bachelor's
degree from Queen's University in Kingston Ontario.
After graduation, she moved back to Taiwan to begin
her work experience. Immediately after returning to
Taiwan, she joined the TSMC customer service group.
Working as the secretary for the secondary
department of HIS for the past two years, she has
learned much from the school, from the parents and
also from the students. Being an administrative
assistant this year is another exciting move for
her. This is her third year at HIS and she's really
grateful to be here with all of you!
This is Laura's first year at HIS. She is
very happy to be part of this big family. Laura
lived, worked and studied in British Columbia,
Canada for 11 years. Before moving back to Taiwan,
she worked in a law office for one year where she
learned important skills for her job at HIS.
Because Canada is such a multi-cultural country,
she met people from many different countries and
learned different languages such as English,
Mandarin and Cantonese. Working at HIS makes her
feel that she is still living in Canada. During her
spare time, she loves to watch movies with her
friends and family and also enjoys biking.
Jenny was born in Taiwan; she has an elder
sister and very supportive parents. At age 12, her
family moved to Vancouver where she completed her
high school degree. Living with her parents, she
felt protected with everything planned and
pre-arranged. In order to learn and explore more,
she decided to go to York University in eastern
Canada where she received her Bachelors degree.
After graduation, she made the move back to Taiwan
and started her career. She worked as an accountant
in Chubei City for years before joining HIS this
summer. Now, she is looking forward to meeting new
people and developing great relationships at her
new home, Hsinchu International School.
Thomas has been involved in education since
1992. He has taught in the United States, Poland,
The Navajo Nation, Thailand, and Taiwan. He has a
master's degree in English Secondary Education, is
fluent in Thai and is an all around nice guy.
Presently, Thomas’ inspiration as a classroom
teacher comes primarily from his son, Sage, and
their adventures. Most insight, however, comes from
his wife, Suntree. The Perkins family spends their
summers visiting ‘Sage-starved’ Grandparents in
Thailand and the US and loving language, reading,
culture, cooking, yoga, rock climbing, the great
outdoors and of course, each other.
Having a bicultural background, Tim is very
interested in bilingual and English education; he
believes that international schools will continue
to be a growing trend in Asia. Tim studied Western
literature and business management during his
undergraduate and received a master's degree in
education from Harvard University. He is also a
member of the Phi Tau Phi Scholastic Honor Society.
During his spare time, Tim loves to sketch, paint,
and play music in a band.
Eric majored in computers and education at
university and obtained certification in elementary
education. He also has expertise in operating
system and server management, Cisco CCNA, Linux LPI
Level 1, Microsoft MCP, MCSA and MCSE on
server2003. Previously he has substituted at public
elementary schools and worked in the IT department
at a flash memory testing company. He is interested
in sports and reading.
Working as a teacher, counselor,
instructional technologist, coach and
administrator, David has taught internationally in
Israel, Cyprus, Scotland, Saudi Arabia and Panama.
He holds a Master's in Counseling and an
Educational Specialist graduate degree in
Instructional Technology. David uses his blog and
podcast to support the "Learning 2.0" educational
movement focusing on 21st century learning skills.
David enjoys reading, fitness activities and travel
with his family.
Kader is a native speaker of French and
teacher of French as a Foreign Language. He has
been teaching for the past 6 years at National
Taiwan Normal University in Taipei. The Chinese
culture has been fascinating to him since becoming
a student. On an internship at Tunghai University,
he learned about how Taiwan students study French.
This experience helped him design a set of French
teaching methods, which have been very helpful for
students. It was also the topic of his Master's
thesis for Teaching French as a Foreign Language.
He also earned a Master's degree in Sociology and
understands the difficulties and frustrations one
can encounter when starting a new life in a foreign
country. Having lived in Taiwan for the past six
years, Kader has developed a greater understanding
for not only Taiwan's culture and environment but
also Taiwanese students. Drawing upon his
experience, he continuously conducts research on
better teaching methods. He has a true passion for
music, travelling and discovering new countries and
cultures. Kader likes to play music at the school
with the students and returns to Taipei every
weekend to practice music with his two bands. On
top of all of his other qualifications, Kader is
also a Delf/Dalf examiner and corrector.
An award winning teacher and motivational
speaker, Dr. Pierce holds a Bachelor of Science
degree in Psychology from Monmouth College in New
Jersey. Rick received his Masters of Science degree
in Counseling from the Pennsylvania State
University and later received his Doctor of
Philosophy degree from Texas Tech University in the
area of Counseling Psychology. In addition to his
current consulting work, Rick has extensive
leadership experience in both the non-profit and
for-profit arenas. Rick has owned his own small
business, has served on several major Boards, and
most recently served as a member of the Senior
Leadership Team for the Milton Hershey School, the
worlds largest, private residential school for
disadvantaged youth, where he had oversight
responsibility for 1500 students, a staff of 300+
professionals and para-professionals and an annual
budget in excess of $13.5 million. Prior to this
experience, Rick was a tenured Associate Professor
of Human Development and Family Studies at the
Pennsylvania State University where he taught
courses in all areas of Life-Span Development and
served as a member of the Penn State Graduate
Faculty.
